About the lenten campaign

Two weeks before Easter, around 40,000 volunteer fundraisers from 1,200 Norwegian religious communities go door to door across the country collecting money for Norwegian Church Aid's work.

Norway's second largest fundraiser

The Lenten campaign is a tradition that goes far back in time. More than 50 years ago, the churches in Norway decided to organize an annual fundraiser for Norwegian Church Aid’s work. Norwegian Church Aid’s Lenten campaign is currently the second largest door-to-door fundraising campaign in Norway, after the telethon. The campaign is during a time of the church year called Lent.

Lent lasts for 40 days from Ash Wednesday, but the actual campaign itself is held across the country from the Sunday to Tuesday before Palm Sunday. The money raised goes to Norwegian Church Aid’s work all over the world, and is not earmarked for the projects presented in words and pictures. With every krone raised, we can help those who need it most. A total of NOK 1.75 billion has been raised for Norwegian Church Aid’s Lenten campaign over more than 50 years.

In 2024, we raised NOK 35 million. These are very important funds for saving lives and bringing about change in all of the countries where we work. We see that the combination of going door-to-door and a sponsorship campaign has resulted in us breaking previous records. You can read more about the two campaigns here.

With your support, we have also managed to get other major players in Norway and around the world to support the work. Every krone you raise is essential for us to launch major relief operations when disasters strike, as well as scale up the work for those who need it most. Together we can do even more where the need is greatest.

More than money

The Lenten campaign is about more than raising money. Norwegian Church Aid works on behalf of the churches in Norway around the world, and we create content for Lent for the churches. During Lent, candidates for confirmation across the country are taught about how unjust the world is, and they get to participate in the diaconal ministry mission of helping to raise money for the work we do together. Every year we also highlight some of the root causes of poverty and conflict, and how decision-makers in Norway can make the world more equitable. We know that poverty and injustice are man-made. This means that we can fight poverty and create a just world if we become engaged and work politically.
